There is no argument that the publishing business is going through challenging times. National and local publishing houses are grappling with new forms of competition for reader and advertiser attention as a result of the rise of the Internet, cable and satellite broadcasting and even the proliferation of mobile devices.


Circulation is decreasing and revenue is following. To try and offset this, most publishing companies are looking at ways to tighten their operations and reduce workflow costs where possible. As a result, many capital equipment expenditures have been put on hold, such as buying new machines such as platesetters, as an example.


However, now just may be the perfect time for publishers to reinvest in their operations and purchase new equipment. The economic stimulus package introduced this year by President Bush contains approximately $50 billion in tax incentives aimed at encouraging businesses to reinvest. These provisions would include a 50 percent write-off of capital equipment purchased this year and a $200,000 deduction for equipment purchased by small businesses.
