The recent historical appointment of Sonya Sottomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court gives us a perfect illustration of how our society is changing. And as society changes, becoming more multicultural, so does the need to plan meetings and conferences that reflect the transformation. This goes for attendee mix, overall conference themes and breakout session topics. But it doesn’t stop there. What about location and facilities? Are there certain locations and properties that are better attuned to the specific needs that accompany a multicultural event?

In fact, the checklist meeting planners must consider when working on multicultural affairs can be fairly lengthy, though not necessarily daunting. Things to take into consideration include having a diverse speaker roster to present an equally diverse mix of topics, awareness of social customs and an understanding of how to meet the needs of attendees while recognizing differences between cultures, anticipating language barriers by making translators available when necessary, and accommodating dietary requirements that may vary based on regional, ethnic or religious customs.

After taking all this into consideration, meeting planners must ensure the organizations involved in the event as sponsors or participants also have a clear understanding of these multicultural matters. In so doing, they must work in concert with the organizations to select appropriate locations and meeting facilities well-versed in multicultural events.

Join Successful Meetings and Meeting News magazines for a live webcast, sponsored by Visit Jacksonville, featuring an in-depth discussion of the challenges and opportunities that surround the planning of multicultural events. Attend this online-only event to learn what to look for the right event locations.
